Inviting friends, cousins, relatives or just the two of you for the evening– No joyous evening can end without a glass of red wine, some cheesy snacks and a room full of smiles and laughter. Well, drinking is bad and injurious to health- we all have heard that several times and have also followed it strictly, but did you know that drinking red wine occasionally and in limits not just promises a gala evening but a healthy lifestyle also. Surprisingly yes..!! Red wine has much more health benefits to it than just a good taste and a refreshing drink.

Red wine keeps heart healthy

Red wine contains certain antioxidants that help in preventing heart disease by increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the ‘good’ cholesterol). It also protects the artery damage by reducing the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (the ‘bad’ cholesterol).

Antioxidants in red wine called polyphenols may help protect the lining of blood vessels in your heart. One such polyphenol called resveratrol reduces the formation of blood clots and produces changes in blood pressure, thus helping in smooth functioning of the heart and the body.

Red wine also contains flavonoids and saponins that protect you against cardiovascular diseases. But then, red wine consumed only in moderation can result positively. Well, it simply means that no date now can end without a red wine- after all it’s the matter of ‘heart’..!

The skin of the red grapes from which the red wine is made is actually a rich source of resveratrol. Resveratrol as already mentioned is a polyphenol that keeps the heart healthy. Resveratrol may also help the diabetics to regulate their blood sugar. It significantly decreases the total cholesterol and systolic pressure. It helps to induce natural cell death in certain types of cancers, most often colon cancer. Ladies can definitely now hunch on a glass of wine with ease.

Resveratrol can also help in keeping your memory sharp. The various researches conducted have shown that resveratrol can also hamper the formation of beta- amyloid protein, a key ingredient in the plaque found in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. Thus, red wine helps in regulating the brain functioning giving you a sharp memory. The antioxidants in red wine play a major role in anti-aging. They dilute the damaging free radicals that cause aging and age-related diseases. As compared to grape juice, red wine is better and a preferable choice as it has more of the polyphenol resveratrol which is the key ingredient in wine. Resveratrol is high in grape skin which is used while fermenting the red wine, unlike grape juice where it is not used.
